Dr Mac Nixon

Dr Mac Nixon is an orthopaedic surgeon residing in the Hunter region who specialises in disorders of the hip and knee. Mac also performs general orthopaedic surgeries. Mac practices “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery”, which leads to faster recovery, less pain and earlier discharge from hospital.

Mac is a born and bred Queenslander, raised in humble beginnings, growing up in Mount Isa and Mackay. His father recalls the moment when Mac was a mere 10 years old when he informed his parents that he would like to become a surgeon when he grows up. True to his word, and a testament to his hard work, focus and determination, Mac completed his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at James Cook University (JCU), Queensland. Mac then completed his general orthopaedic training through the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) in Newcastle. Mac subsequently went on to complete two subspecialty fellowships. St John of God, Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Reconstruction Fellowship, in Perth, Western Australia.  Followed by the Orthopaedic Research Institute of Queensland Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Reconstruction Fellowship, in Townsville, Queensland.

Mac is passionate about patients regaining their livelihood and their sense of self again. He aims to provide this through comprehensive assessments, advanced surgical management techniques, clear and concise education and individualised rehabilitation plans. Mac is meticulous, he doesn’t just look at the injury itself, instead considers the entirety of a patient, including their lifestyle, what daily activities are important to them, their own personal goals and their social support network. The possibility of undergoing surgery can be daunting and often is a vulnerable time for patients and their families. Mac is extremely personable, caring and thorough in every aspect through the entire illness trajectory, from the moment he meets patients, through surgery and follow-up.

Mac deeply values the importance of education and the positive ripple effect which further information can have in any given circumstance. Mac takes great pleasure and genuinely enjoys not only educating his patients and their loved ones, but also registrars, junior doctors, and other medical staff. Mac prides himself on being a supportive and encouraging mentor to all his colleagues.
